Concept & Art Direction

Music is movement before it becomes sound

Concept
This project started with the idea of capturing a musicians movement as a single, continuous trace. The line becomes a record of how a performance unfolds: the pressure, the timing, the intention behind every shift of the hand.
It makes the physical act of playing visible, thus creating a precise memory of something normally gone the moment it is played.

Each performance produces a unique visual signature that reflects how a musician plays, not just what they play.

By converting the hand’s path into data points, the Play Pilot enables musicians to:

•    review and refine their playing
•    compare multiple attempts
•    overlay their line with a teacher’s version
•    analyze difficult passages visually
•    study new pieces through the “gesture signature” of other performers

The system is designed to be accessible to everyone.
A simple LED strap — worn on the bow hand — communicates with the browser-based tool and captures the motion in real time, without the need for additional hardware.

Long-exposure motion studies - Initial research visualizing bow trajectories before translating them into real-time data

The system extracts four core parameters from the bow’s movement:

  1. Vertical Position Indicates which string is being played and suggests its frequency range.
  2. Speed Reveals rhythmic accuracy and alignment with the piece’s tempo.
  3. Directional Changes Identifies up-bow and down-bow segments and their articulation.
  4. Stroke Length Distinguishes between legato and staccato passages.

The real time Motion Capture, recording the hand movement and allowing any user to export it as a csv table

Webcam → brightest point → real-time path → CSV export

The final web application includes:

• real-time line visualization
• downloadable CSV data of your performance
• an upload and comparison tool
• a library of recorded gesture lines from other musicians
